Documentary // Published and Personal Work

A few examples of my photography both published and unpublished. I am working on a separate website featuring my commercial and editorial work.

From a series about nightlife in Moscow, Russia for the magazine Maxim. I’ve always loved this type of street photography. Taking pictures in public places is always a challenge. I do my best to be discreet, using the smallest camera possible and only available light.

Ballerina photographed backstage at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg, Russia. I was very fortunate to be invited to photograph dancers during rehearsals at this renowned theater that was called the Kirov Ballet in the Soviet era.

While on assignment for the New York Times, I took this picture of a steel mill worker. This image was not the one the editors chose for the story, but one of my favorite portraits.

Assignment for Hartford Family Winery

The grape harvest started around midnight and lasted until dawn.

Dancing Between Two Worlds

For the portrait series of the Kashaya Pomo dance group “Su Nu Nu Shinal” I photographed ten of the dancers in traditional Pomo regalia and also portrayed in their modern lives. The diptych images reveal the sharp contrast between the dual identities of each dancer, Pomo and American. The lead dancer, Jerry Pinola, told me: “When I’m dancing, I’m not Jerry. My ancestors didn’t want me to be this guy. The modern world is putting on a costume for me, something that I'm pretending to be.”

The full 10-image series “Dancing Between Two Worlds” was published by Lens Magazine November, 2022

I have always been fascinated by religion and its place in society. I have photographed bar and bat mitzvahs, monks on an island monastery in Northern Russia and, most recently, a baptism in our town of Monte Rio on the Russian River organized by a Peruvian Church based in San Francisco.

Valaam Monastery

The Valaam monastery is located north of St. Petersburg on an island on Lake Ladoga. I was invited to live with the monks and photograph their lives in this remote place that is a destination for many pilgrims of the Orthodox faith.
